Data Centres Australia and DC Byte, global provider of data centre market intelligence, have formed a new partnership to provide independent data insights to inform evidence-based policy and planning.

The partners have published the first Australian Data Centre Forecast Report, highlighting the complexities of growth tracking, and revealing new forward-looking capacity forecasts based on industry-sourced insights and development trends research. The research finds that Australia has a current operational data centre capacity of 1.5GW and is on track to double that figure to 3.2GW by 2030.

Australia has emerged as a key data centre market within the Asia Pacific region in recent years with significant opportunity for continued investment. Ensuring policymakers, stakeholders and market participants are equipped with credible market intelligence and forecasting data will be key to realising that opportunity.

The partnership brings together Data Centres Australia’s national industry network and DC Byte’s global data centre market intelligence, with the goal of strengthening sector and stakeholder understanding of the landscape in Australia. It reflects their shared commitment to supporting sustainable growth and informed dialogue across the digital infrastructure sector.

The new data released today demonstrates the phased nature of data centre development and the challenge presented by early stage projects, which often do not eventuate as completed projects, leading to inflated forecasts or so-called ‘phantom demand’ in the market.

Data Centres Australia will draw on DC Byte’s market intelligence to support its engagement with members, policymakers and stakeholders. As official data centre market intelligence partner, DC Byte will also provide support to Data Centres Australia members through briefings, insight sessions, and other engagements.

The alliance helps connect industry stakeholders with broader market perspectives and international context. In addition, the partnership aims to foster greater collaboration between industry, government, investors and other organisations shaping the digital infrastructure ecosystem.

Belinda Dennett, Chief Executive Officer, Data Centres Australia said: “Australia has a significant opportunity to position as a global hub for AI infrastructure investment and sustainable data centre development. One of the challenges we keep hearing from policy makers, utilities and planners is around forecasting. Forecasting requires accurate data informed by first-hand, on-the-ground intelligence.”

“We are delighted to announce a formal partnership between Data Centres Australia and DC Byte, the world's leading data centre market intelligence firm, to provide credible data on Australia's data centre landscape and growth projection.”

“We believe making this data widely available to policy-makers and stakeholders will ground commentary and policy discussion in fact, and result in better outcomes for the industry and for Australia.”

For DC Byte, the partnership offers a meaningful platform to contribute to industry wide conversations across a market that continues to grow in regional importance.

James Murphy, Managing Director APAC, DC Byte said: “As data centres become more important to Australia’s digital future, having clear visibility into the market matters. We’re pleased to partner with Data Centres Australia to provide independent market intelligence that supports more informed planning and decision-making across industry and the wider ecosystem”

“DC Byte looks forward to further collaboration as both organisations continue to champion reliable insight and evidence-based planning within Australia’s digital infrastructure ecosystem.”
