Optimising SDDC

VMworld 2013:  VMware’s push towards SDDC implementation becomes an opitimisation target for Virtualstream’s xStream

Virtustream has used VMworld to launch what it says is the first secure hybrid cloud solution available in the market today. Its cloud management software, xStream, can now be used to optimise VMware environments for mission-critical applications, together with enhanced security.

The company claims that xStream is particularly well-suited to help users exploit VMware’s current thrust towards SDDC environments.

“We continue to further enhance and optimise our cloud software offering,” said Simon Aspinall, chief vertical markets, strategy and marketing officer at Virtustream. “Virtustream xStream is the leading platform for supporting production applications, such as ERP, CRM, DB, SCM and BI in multi-tenant public clouds, and is key to maximising the potential of the software-defined datacentre (SDDC).”

Enabling the SDDC is about finding the right balance between cost efficiency, business agility and application enablement. Optimising with xStream can provide up to 25 percent improvement in performance of existing VMware environments, as well as providing an architectural framework that enables both the software-defined datacentre and secure hybrid clouds.

By allowing customers to exploit their existing VMware vSphere investment, xStream can optimise their environment to not only reduce additional costs, but also provide the performance enhancements needed to run mission-critical applications.

xStream is, according to some industry analysts, the first secure hybrid cloud solution that allows customers to deploy optimised virtual applications in either a private cloud or public cloud. In addition, it provides advanced security including encryption, two-factor authentication, geo-tagging, Intel TXT, security monitoring (SIEM), and audit and compliance reporting (GRC), all controlled through a simple operational and user interface.

The dynamic µVM (micro-VM) abstraction layer in xStream is claimed to reduce overhead expenditures by up to 40 percent and overall costs such as hardware, licencing by 25-30 percent; the solution also provides service level isolation beyond standard VMware virtualisation.

It is optimised to deliver performance and availability SLAs for mission-critical applications. In addition, all Virtustream optimisations for VMware can be consumed via public cloud through Virtustream’s IaaS or via private cloud through Virtustream’s xStream Cloud Management software.

xStream also provides simplified management of private, public or hybrid cloud environments and has enhanced capabilities that include a service catalogue, together with multi-tenancy, multi-site, security, GRC (Governance, Risk and Compliance) and chargeback features.
