Proact to overhaul data storage system at Eniram

Eniram’s systems collect real-time ship speed data, helping officers to determine the optimum travelling position, speed and propulsion of the ship while also observing weather conditions.
The new, scalable NetApp data storage system forms part of the overhaul of Eniram’s IT infrastructure.

The company is aiming for growth.

“We maintain approximately 10 to 20 terabytes of data, comprising the core of our business activities. Without this data we have no services, and hence no business,” explains Antti Peltonen, head of IT operations at Eniram.

Eniram has to maintain a massive amount of measurement data, which goes on increasing day after day. As well as storing data, all data is archived for the provision of various analysis services. Data must be readily and reliably available.

“We have looked at alternative ways of backing up data using public cloud services, for example, but in the end we concluded that the best way is to create the backups ourselves. As well as to NetApp’s Snapshot technology, we utilise various external media which we supply for long-term storage,” says Peltonen.

NetApp’s Snapshot technology facilitates the backup of active data within the system. This technology can be linked effortlessly to NetApp’s SnapVault if necessary, so allowing easy offsite backups to be made. This feature provides additional security for daily backups.

“SnapVault could be used to replace long-term storage. This would also improve the internal quality of service,” concludes Antti Peltonen.
