Fingal County Council selects Alcatel-Lucent OpenTouch

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise has been selected by Fingal County Council, one of the largest county councils in Ireland, to install its next generation Unified Communication and Collaboration solution, OpenTouch. Working with Alcatel-Lucent and NextiraOne Ireland, the new solution will enable the council to better inform and support residents during an emergency, reduce communications costs, and meet its future mobility needs while at the same time improve employee collaboration.

Fingal County Council serves a community of around 270,000 residents, supported by 1,200 staff across 22 different sites such as libraries, depots and offices. By internalising calls between sites, the system will allow the County Council to make significant cost savings. It has reduced its communications cost by 25% compared to five years ago by changing how it communicates internally and externally. The new OpenTouch capabilities will further the cost savings while delivering on emergency planning, as the new solution will enable it to set up a 'call centre on the fly' spread across several locations at very short notice to service emergency requirements and significantly improve its resident care initiatives. The implementation of this solution concludes a four year review of communication methodology.

The Alcatel-Lucent OpenTouch solution, enriched with a native multimedia communication engine, will incorporate unified communications, collaboration and presence capabilities, as well as softphone capabilities, to support 16 touchscreen My IC Phone users, 600 standard Alcatel-Lucent 8 series IP handsets and 240 employees with full mobility features creating a mobile desktop. The approach, which will allow employees to use their mobile handsets as though they are deskphones, is ideally suited to the versatile nature of Fingal County Council's workforce and will enhance the productivity of employees wherever they are. The new My IC Phone users will also have the added advantage of embedded video on their device, further enhancing the choice of communication channel – a key attribute of the OpenTouch platform.
