Pangaea Networks rolls out 10G CE2.0 in New York

Pangaea Networks has upgraded its optical network to support the next generation of MEF Carrier Ethernet 2.0 (CE2.0) services using Transmode's TM-Series. The new network enables Pangaea Networks to provide high-capacity access for its customers in New York City and the tri-state area.

The new packet-optical network replaces an existing optical infrastructure and now allows Pangaea Networks to rapidly provide robust high-capacity and differentiated services for business Ethernet, mobile backhaul, wholesale, and LAN access. The network supports nodes across New York and the surrounding tri-state area in a large mesh network that supports multiple overlaid protected rings, giving any-to-any connectivity across the network. This any-to-any flexibility allows Pangaea to offer a broad range of services across the network without restriction and can support both Layer 1 and Layer 2 packet-optical applications.

"After a thorough technical evaluation of 12 different global providers of packet-optical networking solutions, we selected Transmode", commented Matthew O'Leary, Pangaea Networks Vice President of Engineering & Operations. "There were a number of factors that led to Pangaea's selection of the Transmode TM-Series to support the next leg up in our network expansion. Key among them is our ability to now deploy the bandwidth equivalent of 40 wavelengths of capacity right out of the gate, to support increasing customer demand for our PANMetro Ethernet Ring Service."

"In addition, the ability to offer our customers 10Gig, STM-64 and OC192 services as well rapidly scaling capacity to 80 wavelengths through multiplexing without the need for regeneration equipment, allows us to scale at a lower cost, while maintaining a fully redundant network. There were no other suppliers that could provide the type of modular platform that the Transmode TM-Series provides, while also maintaining strict adherence to Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) standards for Quality of Service," added O'Leary.

At the heart of the network deployed by Pangaea Networks is Transmode's family of EMXP packet optical transport switches. By adding ROADMs together with these switches, Pangaea is building a CE2.0 network that combines the three powerful standardized features defined by the MEF of Multi-CoS, Interconnect and Manageability, ensuring high service performance as well as flexibility and scalability. The network supports services up to 10G today and is designed for a simple upgrade to 100G backhaul and 100G services when needed.

One of the key benefits Pangaea Networks recognized in the solution was Enlighten(TM), Transmode's multi-layer management suite. Of particular interest was the Transmode Planning Tool (TPT), which greatly simplifies deployment of new services.

Services are currently being migrated from the previous network to the new network without any interruption in service performance. The upgrade is expected to be completed in early 2015.

Björn Andersson, Transmode's Vice President, Americas, commented, "We are delighted to be announcing another new customer in North America. It is a further example of our technology meeting the requirements of a broad range of network operators in the region. This project also shows that the demand for Business Ethernet continues to grow and that our solutions are a cost effective way of enabling our customers to build high capacity networks to meet this demand."
