DataCentred joins European procurement initiative

DataCentred has become a member of the Helix Nebula Initiative – HNI. The HNI and the newly-launched project, Procurement Innovation for Cloud Services in Europe – PICSE, both support the uptake of cloud computing in Europe.

DataCentred builds and operates large-scale public and private cloud infrastructure powered by Open Source software. The company is headquartered in Manchester, UK, with customers in the academic research, higher education and broadcast industries. DataCentred’s systems are built around Open Source software and open standards, providing cloud resources to support public sector commercial customers in Europe. The company is committed to aid the HNI in offering an open, secure and trusted Cloud Computing Infrastructure for European science, businesses and society.

The Helix Nebula Initiative supports the uptake of cloud computing in Europe. The initiative has set up several task forces to identify ways to open up the European federated cloud marketplace to a wider number of suppliers. Currently around 30 commercial and publicly funded cloud service providers are part of the initiative, including CERN, The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) and the European Space Agency (ESA), so that demand-side organizations can benefit from an even broader portfolio of cloud services.

The Helix Nebula consortium’s enthusiasm and motivation has facilitated the shift from a ‘cloud active’ to a ‘cloud productive’ phase, to seize new opportunities and challenges. The partnership continues its commitment to offer an open, secure and trusted Cloud Computing Infrastructure for European science, businesses and society to become leaders in a highly competitive global market.

DataCentred and HNI will work together to open up the European federated cloud marketplace which is key to enabling demand-side organizations to benefit from an even broader portfolio of cloud services.

Dr Mike Kelly, CEO of DataCentred, commented: “Our membership of the Helix Nebula Initiative further demonstrates DataCentred’s long term commitment as a supplier of open source and cloud software services. This initiative will help to guarantee transparency in the marketplace and we are delighted to be working with Helix Nebular to help the PICSE initiative achieve its goals of further enabling a cloud productive environment in Europe in which its member organisations on the demand-side can benefit from an even broader portfolio of cloud services.”
