Organisations are still facing significant challenges when it comes to meeting demand for digital transformation, according to a survey by award-winning app platform KnowledgeKube.
The research, which involved interviews with over 100 European wide private and public sector IT leaders, found that 70% said there was a desire to go digital and automate processes within their organisation.
The study revealed, however, that only 30% were confident their organisation could rapidly amend existing systems and applications. Fewer than two in five (39%) believed these changes could be made moderately quickly, while the remainder said that the ability to amend is slow (30%) or non-existent (1%).
Peter Robbins, managing director at Mercato Solutions – creators of KnowledgeKube, said: ‘‘To realise the potential of large scale digital initiatives, we have to remove the common barriers of time, cost and perceived risk of going digital, whether that be for Smart City transformation, a ‘paperless’ NHS or FinTech companies looking for the next innovation.
“Underpinning these barriers are complexities around data, inflexible systems, process and a global developer shortage, which are holding progress back.’’
When asked to describe their organisation’s progress towards digitisation, only 30% claimed to be ‘digitally transformed’. Almost 31% said they were still ‘going through the process of transformation’, while 28% said, although they had plans to digitise, they were yet to begin their digital journey.
The survey also revealed that three quarters (74%) of organisations have a need to share data with partners and third parties but only half (49%) currently have the ability to easily share data.
Robbins continued: “There is a need for fundamental change around how leaders aim to effectively implement digital approaches as we move into a new era of web, cloud, mobile and self-discovery.
“Agility is key, yet code is slow and there are too few skilled engineers to meet demand for extending legacy systems, connecting and using data from on-premise and cloud based systems or delivering customer facing apps.  These are all critical requirements for joined up digital operations.
”Emerging app platforms are now enabling business users to create apps and bridge the skills gap right out of the box. It is only a matter of time before this becomes the new standard for rapid creation of applications.”
