UK chartered accountants firm, UHY Hacker Young, has deployed Datto’s flagship recovery service suite, SIRIS, as an upgrade of its data backup system. The firm had been using a manual tape backup system that required manual changeover of the tapes every night, a process which put its data retention capabilities at risk from human error and corruption or loss of the data tapes.
Furthermore, UHY Hacker Young was also obliged to archive the tapes at a secure off-site location at additional expense.
Chris Prutton, IT Manager, UHY, comments: “UHY is just one of the accountancy groups subject to strict regulatory bodies’ rules on the time required for data to be held by them. Any data loss could have incurred a serious fine and corruption or loss of a data tape would have been disastrous. When reviewing the data backup system as part of a larger upgrade project, we quickly realised that the tape provisions which had worked for UHY for so long were no longer the right way of backing up its confidential client and internal data. In addition, the storage of the data backup tapes off-site was another cost that UHY was paying for this now outdated backup service.”
Recognising that the current backup system needed to be updated, Managed Services Provider, Complete I.T. selected Datto’s SIRIS 2 Enterprise processor thanks to its cloud-based disaster recovery and business continuity capabilities. Datto’s SE100000 processor allowed Complete I.T. to backup 10TB of data, ensuring the thousands of gigabytes of sensitive client data is managed in a foolproof way using a secure system – whether employees are working from the office or an alternative location on laptops.
With Datto’s SE10000, which was installed in just a few days, hourly cloud backups are now possible, without the need for any manual maintenance, freeing up Complete I.T.’s time for other IT management tasks and reducing the possibility of human error. In addition, the cloud virtualization service negates UHY’s information being stored on twelve virtual servers, split between two physical hosts, like it had been previously.
Andrew Stuart, Managing Director, EMEA at Datto, concludes: “The payroll bureau is just one of the UHY departments that are already making best use of the new Datto device. Payroll is now able to test new systems and processes, and be far more progressive, safe in the knowledge that UHY’s IT Manager can put things right again without a problem.”
