Alibaba Cloud launches first data centre in Europe

Alibaba Cloud has announced a  new agreement with Vodafone Germany to co-locate Alibaba Cloud’s first European datacentre at Vodafone’s datacentre facilities in Frankfurt, Germany.

The Alibaba data centre is well positioned to meet the increasing demand for secure and scalable cloud computing services from businesses and industries in Europe. It is ideally placed in Germany, one of the leading technology hubs in Europe, with a highly developed technology infrastructure and leading innovation.

With the data centre in Frankfurt, Alibaba Cloud is able to provide customers in Europe and globally with greater access to its diverse offerings, including data storage and processing services, enterprise-level middleware and cloud security services, strengthening its position as a major, world-class global cloud services provider. In addition to the establishment of the data centre, Alibaba Cloud has dedicated teams in Europe to serve customers and partners quickly and efficiently.

“Alibaba Cloud chose Germany as the home for our first data centre in Europe, for its highly developed technology infrastructure and location in the heart of Europe, to demonstrate our commitment to the highest standards in data security, and to reinforce our global expansion strategy,” said Ethan Yu, Vice President of Alibaba Group and General Manager of Alibaba Cloud Global.

“Vodafone has fantastic brand recognition in Germany and experienced professional and technical support,” Mr Yu added.

Vodafone Director of Cloud and Hosting Services Greg Hyttenrauch commented: “Alibaba’s decision to co-locate it first data centre in Europe with us recognises the quality of services we are able to bring to our cloud and hosting customers both here and around the world.”

“The launch of our first data centre in Europe makes Alibaba's scalable technological innovation accessible to businesses of all sizes in Germany and beyond, and is a further proof of our commitment to make it easier for businesses in Europe to grow and scale their business processes in parallel," said Terry von Bibra, General Manager Europe, Alibaba Group. “We’re delighted to strengthen our cloud offering by partnering with Vodafone, one of the most recognised and trusted brands world-wide.”

Rising cloud demand in Europe
Alibaba Cloud offers high-performance, elastic computing power in the cloud. The cloud platform is designed to distribute and easily handle large volumes of traffic and data for our enterprise customers, based on the experience gained from Alibaba Group’s massive global online marketplaces. Alibaba Cloud gives sellers the computing power and scalability to handle spikes in transaction volume with ease. The platform recently demonstrated its capabilities by processing a peak order volume of 175,000 orders per second during Alibaba Group’s 2016 11.11 Global Shopping Festival.

Safe and secure services
Alibaba Cloud complies with applicable law in the jurisdictions in which it operates, including German law for the Frankfurt data centre. In addition, Alibaba Cloud undergoes several third-party audits every year.  In 2016, Alibaba Cloud became the first Chinese cloud computing company that attained ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011, the latest certification for IT service management standards. In 2013, Alibaba Cloud was awarded the world’s first gold certification for cloud security by the British Standards Institute (BSI) and also received ISO/IEC 27001 certification for information security management. With Anti-DDoS as part of its cloud service, Alibaba Cloud has a proven record of protecting customers against DDoS attacks.

Global expansion
In addition to its first data centre in Europe, Alibaba Cloud is also opening data centres in the Middle East, Australia and Japan prior to the end of 2016, bringing Alibaba Cloud’s coverage to 14 key economic centres around the world. Existing data centres include those in mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore and the US.
