Companies could be spending over the odds on server costs

Analysis from Crucial, the memory and storage experts, has shown that companies can save almost ?6,000 per server if they chose to purchase servers with minimal preinstalled components and then install their own server memory and enterprise SSDs.

Memory and storage account for over half of a typical server’s bill of materials (BOM) cost, but analysis has found that the same level of DRAM and SSD performance can be achieved at 35% of the cost for preconfigured servers by installing your own.

While prices often change, the relative ratio between a fully-loaded configuration and one that’s upgraded later typically doesn’t change much. Saving more than ?5,000 on a single server also means you can save a significant amount across an entire deployment?
1 server = ?5,858
5 servers = ?29,288
10 servers = ?58,576
20 servers = ?117,152
100 servers = ?585,760

Michael Moreland, Crucial Server DRAM Product Marketing Manager, commented, “Memory and storage are two of the major cost drivers when buying new servers. It’s astounding to see how much the prices on DRAM and SSDs are marked up when you buy preconfigured servers, which makes the total cost of the server rise even faster. Server manufacturers build quality servers, but this is one instance where you can take matters into your own hands and save loads of money by populating servers with your own DRAM and SSDs.”

“Of course there are many different variables that go into building servers. For this reason, you may think it’s easier and more convenient to pay more for preconfigured servers. However, when you look at the core components of a server – the hardware – there is an enormous opportunity to save your organization money and get exceptional performance. When you’re buying new servers, the amount you potentially save by installing your own DRAM and SSDs in one server gets multiplied across the entire deployment, and that can add breathing room to your IT budget without compromising performance.”
