Base8 &16 fibre capability with sights on 800G applications

Base-16 solutions complete Panduit’s comprehensive fibre infrastructure product selection.

Panduit, has announced the availability of European manufactured Base-8 and Base-16 fibre optics infrastructure products to offer a complete solution to 400G and 800G (2x400G), for switch to server and leaf-spine connectivity. Base-8 continues to demonstrate its highly effective installation and space saving at the connection point, harnesses and cable runs, and Base-16 solutions, extend these capabilities in high speed and density breakout applications.

To gain maximum flexibility in short-reach network connectivity, users are evaluating multimode parallel optics. 400GBASE-SR8 transceivers over 16 parallel MMF (multi-mode fibre), require Base-16 MMF structured cabling solutions. Newer technologies and applications that utilize 400GBASE-SR8 and multimode transceivers offer lower cost and power consumption than SMF for switch-to-server connections.

Base-16 structured cabling, with small form factor cassettes, PanMPO, MPO-16 and Base-16 cabling simplify network deployment in greenfield networks. Furthermore, multimode short reach variant using Base-16 interconnection with SR8 transceivers can be used over existing Base-12 structured cabling infrastructure using a conversion cassette.

A key benefit to Base-16 is high density breakouts – 50G server ports using SR8 – for example from a 400G SR8 optic delivered as a 32-port 1RU modular 400G switch enables 256, 50G breakout ports in a high Radix topology. This can reduce the number of optical links and supporting cable plant – patch panels and connectors – as the deployment is 400G to 400G and using breakout technology to link 50G at the top of rack (TOR) server end without using an actual TOR switch.

Fibre optic infrastructure deployments are increasing, and pre-terminated overhead cable provides simplified cable distribution in pre-populated cabinets. Overhead infrastructure is advantageous in a rolling/rollout environment allowing easier access to end-of-life cabinets and hardware.
