Hitachi Vantara supports FarmaMondo

The Swiss pharmaceutical company’s migration to Hitachi VSP One boosts performance, scalability and sustainability of global business operations.

Hitachi Vantara has modernized and deployed a next-generation storage solution for FarmaMondo, a global player in the supply of specialty pharmaceuticals. Together with its partner Netability, Hitachi Vantara led the implementation of Virtual Storage Platform One (VSP One), a next-generation storage platform that will serve as a reliable and efficient basis for international business operations and help FarmaMondo provide its customers with vital medicines around the clock.

FarmaMondo specializes in the supply of so-called "Unlicensed Medicines" (ULMs) - medicines that are not commercially available in the domestic market but may be prescribed by doctors under certain circumstances. With a growth rate of 30 to 40% per year and business activities in over 20 countries, FarmaMondo requires a robust and reliable IT infrastructure to meet their data management demands. The previous IT infrastructure, which had grown extensively over the years, had reached its performance and capacity limits. Outdated storage solutions and high energy costs were jeopardizing operational efficiency and sustainability goals.

To meet these challenges, FarmaMondo relied on the expertise of Hitachi Vantara and Netability to deliver the advanced technology of the VSP One platform, which offers high performance and scalability, energy efficiency, sustainability and advanced data protection features - all in an easy-to-manage solution.

"Our offices around the world need to be able to access central IT systems around the clock; downtime is not an option for us. With the new infrastructure, we guarantee high performance, maximum scalability and continuous availability - all with lower energy consumption. This not only makes our IT more efficient, but also more sustainable," says Antonio Adorno, IT Manager, FarmaMondo. "We were particularly impressed by the speed of the migration. With Hitachi Vantara and Netability, the changeover was as easy and smooth as possible."

As part of the planned migration project, VMware and SAP applications and databases were transferred from the old storage landscape to the new VSP One Block array. Key points of the migration project include:

Upgrade to NVMe technology: VSP One uses the most modern NVMe flash technology which accelerates and provides predictable performance for interactive applications and batch processing tasks.

Flexibility through dynamic storage: The new solution allows storage space to be expanded gradually and costs to be reduced.

Focus on sustainability: The excellent energy efficiency of the VSP One (certified by ENERGY STAR®) reduces energy consumption per TB to a third. At the same time, VSP One also requires less rack space, resulting in a significantly reduced footprint.

Better performance: batch processes now run more than three times faster. For example, an SAP task that used to take 20 minutes is now completed in just 6 minutes.

Improved data resiliency: VSP One's immutable snapshots protect the company better against ransomware attacks.

Migration support from a specialized partner: Netability enabled seamless and uninterrupted data migration via an ultra-fast fiber optic connection between the old and new storage system ("zero downtime").

"We are delighted to support FarmaMondo in modernizing their IT infrastructure with VSP One and are proud that our technology is helping FarmaMondo to deliver vital medicines to patients worldwide," said Michael Roth, Managing Director Switzerland/Austria at Hitachi Vantara. "The successful collaboration with our partner Netability on this project demonstrates the importance of strong partnerships to help companies overcome their IT challenges and provide the most robust solutions."
