The UK Government is calling on local councils and charities to apply for a share in a newly introduced £9.5 million fund aimed at addressing digital exclusion. This move seeks to empower grassroots initiatives tackling the divide and enabling more people to gain online access.
Backed under the Plan for Change, the Digital Inclusion Innovation Fund targets activities like community workshops which are to bolster digital confidence. Additionally, schemes are being developed to provide essential digital devices such as smartphones and laptops to those currently lacking internet access.
Digital exclusion continues to be a pressing issue in the UK. Currently, a staggering 19 million citizens lack access to essential digital tools and skills. This digital chasm can obstruct access to work opportunities, hinder interactions with crucial public services, and result in increased costs for necessities such as insurance, transport, and groceries.
Elizabeth Anderson, CEO of the Digital Poverty Alliance, expressed her views, disclosing the potential impact of this new fund, "... We're getting increasingly closer to making online access a reality for everyone."
In a bid to enhance digital skills and inclusion, entities in England can apply for financial support ranging from £25,000 to £500,000. Meanwhile, devolved administrations will oversee the fund's distribution within their respective regions.
The fund is a continuation of the Government's ongoing efforts, as outlined in the Digital Inclusion Action Plan launched earlier this year. By focusing investment on community-based solutions, the programme aims to find scalable ventures for potential national implementation.
Digital inclusion is essential for improving living standards and spurring economic growth under the Plan for Change. It ensures more individuals can secure employment, book medical appointments through digital apps, and engage completely in today's society.
UK Telecoms Minister Sir Chris Bryant highlighted the urgency of the situation, addressing the necessity for regions across the UK to bridge the divide and enhance connectivity. "Through this funding, we’re moving further to empower local leaders and groups nationwide who are already working tirelessly to get their communities connected and change countless lives for the better," he stated.
