Mistral AI and EcoDataCenter have announced a €1.2 billion investment in Sweden to advance Europe’s AI infrastructure through a long-term partnership, which will result in the development of an AI-focused data centre at EcoDataCenter’s Borlänge site.

The collaboration will include specialised data centres, high-performance compute capacity, and localised AI capabilities, representing a step toward strengthening Europe’s technological autonomy in artificial intelligence. Mistral AI will deploy large-scale AI computing resources at the site. The centre is expected to become operational in 2027, supporting the scaling and operation of Mistral’s next-generation AI models.

By combining Mistral AI’s European foundation models with EcoDataCenter’s high-performance, energy-efficient infrastructure, the partnership aims to create a fully European AI framework, with data designed, built, and stored locally.

Arthur Mensch, CEO and Co-Founder of Mistral AI, highlighted that the initiative reinforces Europe’s independent AI capabilities and lays the foundation for a European AI cloud to support industries, public institutions, and research. EcoDataCenter will manage the infrastructure using renewable energy and advanced cooling technologies to accommodate demanding AI workloads. The Borlänge facility is designed for scalability and will host NVIDIA’s latest-generation Vera Rubin GPUs.

Peter Michelson, CEO of EcoDataCenter, noted that AI is essential to Europe’s competitiveness, security, and economic growth. The project strengthens Sweden’s position as a hub for advanced AI and digital infrastructure, embedding sustainability and resilience throughout.

The investment supports broader European objectives to enhance competitiveness, resilience, and technological sovereignty in the digital economy.
