Across the world internet usage and the consumption of information is significantly increasing. By 2013 there will be over 2.4 billion users on the internet, up from 360 million users in 2000. More data centres are needed to facilitate this growth. This new facility, which is DigiPlex’s sixth data centre will, once the retrofit is complete, provide over 6,000m2 of technical data centre space.
Byrne Murphy, Chairman of the DigiPlex Group, comments: “The purchase of this site presents DigiPlex with a great opportunity to continue to grow its market leading position in Sweden and Northern Europe. The site’s close proximity to Stockholm makes it well positioned for redevelopment into a data centre, providing clients with high speed connectivity.
“The new site comes with security of power supply delivered from renewable hydro and wind sources. The existing site building infrastructure lends itself to redevelopment into a data centre with one metre deep floor spaces, four metre ceiling heights and generous inside spacing.”
Situated in Upplands, Vasby, which is located between Stockholm and the city international airport, Arlanda, the site has additional planning approval to be further developed at a later date. Once completed the data centre will deliver a minimum of 20MW of power with the built in modules offering both retail and wholesale space.
Murphy added “It’s great to be able to turn this factory, which has historical importance in the area, into a state of the art facility that will continue to add to Sweden and indeed Europe’s cloud and data storage capabilities, while also helping to continue to build DigiPlex’s reputation and twelve year track record for never ever, ever going down.”
Scheduled to be completed in autumn 2014, the data centre will include DigiPlex’s state of the art Air-to-Air (A2A) cooling, which halves the amount of energy used to keep servers at an ideal working temperature, and reduces power cost for customers. The new data centre will also benefit from DigiPlex’s Hypoxic Air Fire prevention system, in conditioned modules and plant areas. The infrastructure is designed for 100% concurrent maintainability with no down time.
