Amazon Web Services announces new transatlantic cable dubbed Fastnet

AWS unveils Fastnet, a game-changing cable system enhancing connectivity between the US and Ireland, fortifying cloud computing and AI capabilities.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has made headlines with the introduction of Fastnet, a revolutionary transatlantic subsea fibre optic cable linking Maryland, USA, and County Cork, Ireland. Set to be operational by 2028, Fastnet is designed to enhance the resilience of global connectivity by providing an alternative data route and unique landing points. This development promises to maintain uninterrupted services even when existing undersea cables face disruptions.

Fastnet spearheads network resilience by bypassing conventional cable corridors, featuring strategic landing points that bolster AWS's infrastructure. This approach safeguards against potential cable issues and supports the growth of cloud computing, AI, and edge applications utilising AWS services like Amazon CloudFront and AWS Global Accelerator.

The system showcases cutting-edge optical switching branching unit technology, capable of redirecting data to future landing sites in response to evolving demands. Its scalability is fine-tuned for mounting AI traffic, empowering users to scale their data requests seamlessly.

Constructed with durability in mind, Fastnet incorporates reinforced cable armouring, especially in nearshore areas, to resist natural and human-induced damage. With a capacity surpassing 320 terabits per second, it can transfer the entire digitised Library of Congress three times every second or simultaneously stream 12.5 million HD films.

The success of Fastnet is predicated upon collaboration with local communities. AWS has engaged with local bodies in Maryland and County Cork from the outset, striving to align the project's outcomes with community needs.

In a commitment to local enrichment, AWS is establishing Community Benefit Funds in both regions. These funds aim to tackle individual community priorities, such as environmental sustainability, STEM education, economic growth, and diversity initiatives.

AWS's existing infrastructure already spans 38 Geographic Regions and 120 Availability Zones, with plans for future expansion. Fastnet augments this vast network, ensuring seamless, reliable data flow across continents, crucial for the digital transformation of global industries.

By implementing innovations like Fastnet, AWS continuously invests in growing and fortifying the underpinnings of the digital age. The anticipatory design and community-focused approach offer an exciting glimpse into the future landscape of global cloud infrastructure.
